I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items from the area, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
