I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate a tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and remove valuable items from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
